Minorities in Shark Sciences (MISS) is Making Waves tells the story of how four black female scientists came together to help women of color and gender minorities enter the field of shark science. It highlights the benefits of having more diversity in science and providing women with the necessary opportunities to succeed in STEM jobs. In 2022, this story won a NATAS Regional Suncoast Emmy in the Diversity/Equity/Inclusion - Short Form Content category.
I had the opportunity to produce, film and edit this segment. From reaching out to the organization to filming on their research vessel to creating the final cut, I had full creative control. One of the things I love about producing is finding hidden gems within South Florida like Minorities in Shark Sciences (MISS) and witnessing the passion and resilience of the people involved. Being able to capture that and share it with the rest of the community is a true privilege.
Life in the Dark: The Polar Night was filmed at Ny-Ålesund, the northernmost year-round research station in the world. Scientists brave frigid temperatures and perpetual night to solve an ocean mystery: how some of the tiniest animals survive at a time of year when their main food source is not available. This episode is part of Changing Seas, South Florida PBS' ocean science program.
I had the opportunity to serve as second camera operator for this production, filming interviews and broll as well as assisting the director of photography. In 2023, this story won a NATAS Regional Suncoast Emmy in Environment/Science - Long Form Content category.
